Create Snippets
Code Snippets are the core building block of SnippKit.
They are designed to help you store, organize, and reuse code safely — with smart limits, visibility controls, and developer-friendly editing built in.
This page explains how to create snippets, and why SnippKit handles them differently from notes or repos.
What Code Snippets are for
Code Snippets help you:
- Save reusable code fragments
- Preserve working solutions you don’t want to rewrite
- Build a personal or team knowledge base
- Share solutions without exposing full projects
Snippets can be:
- Private (only you)
- Public (discoverable by the community)
- Collections & Team based (shared securely)
Heart of SnippKit
Everything else in SnippKit builds around snippets — folders, tags, search, teams, extensions, and the CLI.
Creating a new snippet
You can create a snippet from anywhere in the app.

snippkit.com/s/
This form handles validation, plan limits, and routing logic before data ever reaches the database, ensuring a fast and safe creation experience.
How to create a snippet
- In the header, click Create (or the + icon or Shift + N)
- Select Snippet from the dropdown
- Enter a suitable title for your snippet
- Choose a programming language
- Write or paste your code
- Add optional tags to help with organization
- Choose the visibility — Private or Public
- Click the Save button
Your snippet is stored instantly — no page reloads.
You can view all your saved snippets at:
Title & language selection
Title
The title should describe what the code does, not how it works.
Good examples:
Quick Sort AlgorithmReact debounce hookDocker cleanup command
Language
Language selection controls:
- Syntax highlighting
- Where the snippet appears (Snippets / Scripts / JSON)
- How it’s categorized internally
SnippKit intelligently routes snippets based on language:
- Script-like languages → Scripts
- JSON formats → JSON
- Everything else → Snippets
Smart routing
If you select a script or JSON language from the wrong section, SnippKit will warn you and save it in the correct place.
Code editor
SnippKit uses a powerful, developer-grade editor.
The editor includes:
- Syntax highlighting
- Line numbers
- Auto layout and formatting
- Clean, distraction-free design
You can paste large blocks of code or write directly inside the editor.
Plan-based limits (important)
To keep SnippKit fast and fair, snippets follow plan-based limits.
Each snippet is validated by:
- Line count
- File size
- Total account storage
Per-snippet limits
| Plan | Max Lines | Max Size |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 150 | 5 KB |
| Pro | 600 | 20 KB |
| Pro+ | 1,500 | 50 KB |
| Enterprise | 10,000 | 2 MB |
Live counters show:
- Current line usage
- Current size usage
Limits are enforced before saving, so you always know why something fails.
Same rules everywhere
These limits match backend validation exactly — no surprises after saving.
Tags
Tags help you group and find snippets quickly.
- Comma-separated
- Lowercase only
- Letters, numbers, and hyphens supported
Examples:
react,hooks,apidocker,devopssorting,algorithms
Tags power search, filters, and discovery.
Privacy & visibility
SnippKit gives you fine-grained control over who can see a snippet.
Public
- Discoverable by the community
- Shareable via link
- Useful for reusable knowledge
Private
- Visible only to you
- Ideal for personal utilities or experiments
- Need to share? Use Ghost Send for secure, temporary access or attach a Team for collaboration
Folder & collection rules
- Folder snippets are always private — You may optionally make a snippet public to share it with others.
- Collection snippets inherit team permissions — visibility is locked to the collection's setting and cannot be changed manually after adding.
Visibility is enforced automatically — you don’t need to manage it manually.
Security by default
SnippKit prevents accidental exposure by enforcing visibility rules at creation time.
Custom URLs (Pro+)
Pro+ users can assign a custom slug to a snippet.
This creates clean, memorable links like:
snippkit.com/s/my-featureFeatures:
- Live availability check
- Only lowercase, numbers, and hyphens allowed
- Optional — snippets work without it
- Useful for command line execution using snix
If a slug already exists, SnippKit blocks saving until you choose another.
Storage awareness
SnippKit tracks total account storage, not just individual snippets.
You’ll see warnings when:
- You’re near your storage limit
- A snippet would exceed remaining space
If storage is full:
- Snippet creation is disabled
- You’re guided to upgrade or clean up
This keeps your workspace healthy and predictable.
Saving & validation
Before saving, SnippKit validates:
- Required fields (title, language, code)
- Plan limits
- Storage availability
- Slug uniqueness (if enabled)
If something fails, you’ll see a clear, actionable message — never a silent error.
How this fits with SnippKit
Code Snippets connect to everything:
- Folders & Tags → Organization
- Search & Feed → Discovery
- Teams & Collections → Collaboration
- Extensions & CLI → Save from anywhere
- Custom URLs → Share cleanly
They are the foundation of your SnippKit workflow.
You now understand how to create, manage, and scale code snippets —
the most important feature in SnippKit.
