Folders & Organization

Folders provide a structured, hierarchical directory system for organizing your code snippets and CLI commands within SnippKit.
They allow you to group related code, nest subfolders, and manage large collections of technical knowledge with drag-and-drop support.

Overview

As your library of snippets and commands grows, flat lists and tags can become difficult to browse. SnippKit’s folder system introduces file-system-like organization directly into your workspace.
Folders in SnippKit support unlimited nesting levels, dual layout views (Grid and List), custom sorting, and interactive drag-and-drop placement for both snippets and subfolders.
Direct App Shortcut
You can open your live folder hierarchy anytime at /folders or by clicking Folders in your main navigation menu.

What you can do

With Folders, you can:
  • Build nested folder trees: Organize projects into root folders and subfolders.
  • Store snippets and commands: Place both code snippets and terminal commands in any folder.
  • Drag and drop: Move snippets or subfolders into target folders instantly.
  • Toggle layout views: Switch between visual Grid View and compact List View.
  • Perform bulk actions: Enter selection mode to move or remove multiple items at once.
  • Context menu control: Right-click folders or items for quick actions (rename, delete, move).

Getting started

Creating your first folder

  1. Navigate to Folders.
  2. Click the New button in the top header.
  3. Select Create Folder from the dropdown menu.
  4. Enter a folder name in the modal.
  5. Click Create to save.
Your new folder will appear immediately in your root directory.

How it works

SnippKit manages folder structures through relational parent-child links stored in your database.

Folder hierarchy

  • Root Directory (/folders): Contains top-level folders that have no parent folder.
  • Subfolders (/folders/[folder-slug]): Folders nested inside another parent folder. Breadcrumb navigation at the top of the page allows you to traverse back up the tree.

Item counts

Each folder card displays live item counters summarizing:
  • Total nested subfolders
  • Total contained snippets
  • Total contained CLI commands

Creating & managing folders

Click on any folder card or list row to open that folder at /folders/<slug>.

Renaming a folder

  1. Right-click the target folder card (or click its options menu ...).
  2. Select Rename Folder.
  3. Enter the new folder name.
  4. Confirm your changes. SnippKit automatically updates the folder's display name while preserving its unique ID and relationships.

Deleting a folder

  1. Right-click the folder and select Delete Folder.
  2. A confirmation dialog will summarize the folder contents.
  3. Confirm deletion.
Deleting parent folders
Deleting a folder removes its folder entry and unlinks associated items. Contained snippets and commands are safely returned to your general unfiled collection — your actual code snippets are never lost.

Drag and drop organization

SnippKit supports intuitive drag-and-drop functionality across the folder UI:
  • Move Snippets into Folders: Click and drag any snippet card directly onto a target folder card to move it into that folder.
  • Move Subfolders into Folders: Drag a subfolder onto another folder card to nest it deeper into your folder tree.
  • Sidebar Integration: Drag items directly onto folders listed in the sidebar tree for fast organization without leaving your current view.

Bulk selection & operations

When organizing large numbers of items:
  1. Click Select Mode in the folder toolbar.
  2. Click individual snippets or commands to highlight them.
  3. Use the bulk action bar to:
    • Move Selected: Relocate all chosen items to a different folder.
    • Remove Selected: Unlink chosen items from the current folder.
  4. Click Exit Selection when finished.

Folder rules & validation

To keep folder structures clean and predictable:
  • Folder Names: Must be between 1 and 60 characters long.
  • Allowed Characters: Letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens, and underscores.
  • Slugs: Slugs are generated automatically from folder names to build clean URL routes.
  • Uniqueness: Subfolders within the same parent folder cannot share duplicate names.

Visibility & privacy

  • Folder Privacy: Folders exist only within your personal workspace and are never exposed publicly.
  • Snippet Visibility: Items inside folders maintain their independent visibility settings (Public vs Private). Adding a public snippet to a folder does not make your folder public.

  • Create Snippets — Learn how to save snippets and attach them to folders at creation time.
  • Cards & Preview — Browse snippet cards, filters, and display modes.
  • Commands Center — Organize and execute reusable CLI commands inside folders.
  • Starred Items — Bookmark your most frequently accessed snippets and commands.
  • Tags & Categories — Combine folder structures with flexible cross-cutting tags.
